25 cars found in Florida lake in 2012

In 2012, police discovered a graveyard of 25 abandoned automobiles corroding on the bottom of a murky Florida lake.

A dive and rescue operation is underway 50 feet below the surface of the Pembroke Park Lake in Broward County.

Among the antiquities discovered were a 1970s Dodge Demon, a 1979 Ford pickup, and even a Cadillac, all of which detectives suspect were stolen or discarded by insurance scammers.

'Our passion'

Bishop and Fleming's mission is to help families of missing individuals find answers.

They consider unsolved missing person cases the "nation's silent mass disaster."

"Our passion is being a voice for the voiceless and our focus will aggressively fight for those who can no longer fight for themselves," the organization wrote.

"Departments, respectfully, have to justify their use of resources, and when a case goes cold, we have the ability to step in. We don’t have to justify our use of resources, and we can help eliminate the drag on personnel locally.

"We can do this, we specialize in it, we can do it on a high level and do so as volunteers."

Cars recovered from the lake

Bishop and Fleming are part of United Search Corps, a volunteer search organization.

On Sunday, Bishop posted a video to Instagram showing multiple deteriorating license plates recovered from the lake.

The caption read: "We are targeting over 40 cold cases involving missing persons that are missing with vehicles in South Florida.

"So far we have found 30 cars within 14hrs of being in Miami."

Vehicles found

Several of the cars were older models that were coated with algae.

So far, a 2002 Nissan Altima confirmed as stolen has been retrieved from the depths, and more are to come.

As of yesterday, four cars were retrieved from the water:

  • Ford Econoline Van
  • Accura Legend
  • Cadillac Deville
  • Ford Crown Victoria

Not sure if bodies will be recovered

Zabaleta also said that there is no end to what they might find underwater, per NBC News.

"In other words, we have no reasons to believe we’re going to find bodies in these cars," he said.

"But who’s to say that these cars weren’t involved in an armed robbery 10 years ago?"

Vehicles spread throughout the lake

According to Alvaro Zabaleta, a Miami-Dade police spokesperson, the automobiles were scattered over the lake, which is located in an industrial area surrounded by warehouses, per NBC News.

Personnel from the private investigative firm that alerted police to the cars on Sunday were at the lake working on a missing persons case, according to Zabaleta.
