Final days of major grocery store after 60 years - retail giant with 165 locations shuts up shop for good in a week

A MAJOR grocery store retailer that has provided for families for almost 90 years is set to close one of its most iconic locations in just days.

Giant Food, which was established in 1936, has announced the closure of one of its oldest stores in Arlington, Virginia.

The store situated in the Lyon Village Shopping Center has been there for over 60 years but will close its doors for good on February 29.

However, customers will have other options to turn to including the retailer's online pick-up and delivery service.

"In the normal course of evaluating our business and local trade areas, we determined that we can adequately serve this community through several other nearby Giant Food locations, as well as our online services, Giant Pickup and delivery," Giant told ARLnow.

"While closing this location, we remain committed to meeting the needs of our customers and providing them the best service."

All employees from the shuttering store are being offered positions at other Giant locations, the company said.

Those who are regular customers of the store at the Lyon Village Shopping Center will have to travel about a mile to the next Giant Food store in Virginia Square.

Despite this, one regular customer was disappointed because of the other retailers at the shopping village that she would visit when going to the grocery store.

"That sucks. It’s my favorite store because of having the Italian Store there," the customer said underneath news of the closure.

As well as The Italian Store, the shopping center also includes a CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks, Big Wheel Bikes, and a BGR burger restaurant.

With 164 stores remaining after the closure at the end of the month, customers will still be able to make use of the retailer's offerings.

In 2022, a busy mother highlighted the importance of the soon-to-be-closed store and her praises apply to the stores and services that are set to remain.

On the Arlington Neighbors Helping Each Other Facebook page, Erin Hatch Neal paid tribute to the store.

"Just wanted to provide a shout out to Giant Food," she said.

"I know there has been a lot posted here about supply chain issues & food shortages.

"We have been Giant Food delivery subscribers since Peapod was first founded - for 20+ years.

"This is the way I have balanced being a busy working mother, and during the pandemic, delivering groceries to my front door step became even more critical for my family of 5."

"Bless the staff at Giant Foods. (And I continue to be incredibly grateful that I didn't have to figure out how to make a grocery run along with running kids around & balancing client calls,)" she added.
