NYPD's role in the events

The fireworks required a massive city effort and the NYPD shared a significant role in keeping the celebration safe.

The department typically has one helicopter in the sky but increased the count to six on the Fourth of July.

Commissioner Eddie Caban told ABC 7 that they were in charge of airborne radiation sensors, ground-based explosive detection, and keeping a close eye on gun crime.

Despite the undertaking, Caban said he loved being in the helicopter, adding: "It's amazing when you're up here,"

"We're sitting here, get to see the greatest show on earth."

Brett Young closes out the show

Brett Young took the stage last to sing a medley of music in honor of America.

He sang ROCK In the USA and Coming to America alongside a violinist and a live band.

A choir also accompanied him as the firework show came to an end.
