Irvin watched the Denver Broncos' thrashing by the Detroit Lions in week 15.

Late in that game, Broncos head coach Payton was spotted on television cameras yelling at Russell Wilson.

Denver was trailing 28-7 in the third quarter when Payton seemingly unloaded on Wilson.

Quarterback Wilson didn't say a word during the fiery showdown on the sidelines.

And Irvin took exception to coach Payton's actions.

He claimed Wilson's $200m contract makes him a partner for Payton.

And Irvin also said the Denver boss needs to prove he can coach in an era of social media and big-money contracts.

Speaking on Monday's Undisputed on FS1, Irvin said: "Why would you stir it up like this?

"Russell Wilson, his wife, his family are going to see that every day on social media.

"This is what we mean when we ask are coaches ready to coach in this era.

"Players are not going to have that, and have that lasting forever on social media, you being berated like that.

"I've never seen you do that to Drew Brees in all the years you worked with him, and you shouldn't do it here.

"There are cameras. You knew that was going to get on air and be played."

And Irvin demanded a public apology from the Broncos head coach.

He said: "Grabbing silently and trying to apologize won't work, you've got to do it like you did here.

"We talk about quarterbacks and leadership - how can you lead your team?"
