Hines, from Round Lake Park, Illinois - over an hour northwest of Chicago - said that the money was sent to a woman named Jada whom she did not know, in 2022, according to local ABC affiliate KABC-TV.

"I had a bible study and when I left out of bible study, I noticed that all my money was gone and all I had was 62 cents left in my Cash App," Hines said.

Hines said she filed a police report and disputed the transaction with Cash App but the online banking app declined her dispute and did not refund the money.

Cash App added that it sends text alerts when unusual activity is suspected but also that it could not “refund or reverse a payment after it’s been completed.”

Hines said that she did not know how her account had been accessed.

She added that her phone had been stolen a month before the money was transferred out of her account and suspected it could have been compromised then.

Hines added that she had felt the financial burden of her situation.

“With the little money I do have, trying to make sure I can feed my son and make sure you know I can get where I need, food to take care of my business and it's been hard," Hines said.

“It’s depressing too, you know because this was a lot of my money that I earned,” she added.

Hines also said that this situation had left her dissatisfied with Cash App.

“I felt used, honestly, with the whole situation," Hines said.

"It was definitely a lesson learned and I definitely regret trusting Cash App with my money."

Cash App did not comment on Hines’s case to KABC-TV but it said that customers will now be asked to confirm if they are sending money to someone outside of their contact list.

The online banking company also gave people a security tip that they should make sure they send money to people they know and trust.
