PATRICK Mahomes and Tony Romo go way back.
Before he was a two-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl Champion, Mahomes was just another budding young quarterback looking to follow in the footsteps of his idol.

And for a young Mahomes, the player he looked up to was none other than Romo.
An undrafted free agent out of Eastern Illinois in 2003, Romo went on to spend fourteen seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, reaching four Pro Bowls in the process.
During the peak of his powers, Mahomes was a self-proclaimed "Die-hard Cowboys fan," as per Forbes, having grown up in nearby Tyler, Texas.
Unfortunately for Mahomes, being born in 1995 meant he missed out on the Cowboys' early 1990s dynasty, led by Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman.

"Aikman was right before me," he said. "So I got a lot of close playoff games but not a lot of wins."
Since their most recent Super Bowl win in January 1996, the Cowboys have gone 5-13 in the playoffs, failing to reach a Super Bowl.
The furthest Romo got was the Divisional Round in 2009 and 2014.
Mahomes wound up staying in state for college, becoming a legend at Texas Tech.

During his time with the Red Raiders, Mahomes' head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who now works for the Washington Commanders, reached out to Romo.
He asked the then-Cowboys starter to write a letter to Mahomes to help encourage the young quarterback.
Brock Purdy left near speechless after being asked about Lee Harvey Oswald comparison in bizarre pre-Super Bowl questionSince that day, Romo has kept a close eye on Mahomes' progress, according to Forbes.
"He was just a kid with big dreams, and it's amazing to see him go out and do what he's done," he said.
Romo described Mahomes as "The standard that all other quarterbacks are going to be evaluated by.
"And for them to get to their dreams, they have to get through this guy, and that's really an incredible honor."
