Russia's Investigative Committee said he chopped up their bodies and began eating them before disposing of the left overs in bags in ponds.
The remains were discarded in a river channel and a lake in the district of the city of Arkhangelsk, in northern Russia.
The killings took place between March 2016 and March 2017, in spots near the city.

A statement said: "In addition to cannibalism, the accused regularly killed and ate cats, dogs, and other small animals and birds.
“Their bone remains were found in packages along with the human ones."
The accused was said to have begun to live in one of his victim’s flats while telling the parents of the killed man their son was working in another city.
The same explanation was later given to police officers who were looking for the missing person.

The other two victims had no relatives, meaning that they were not missed.
The statement added: "Considering that parts of the corpses were found fragmentary, which, in practice, excluded the possibility of their identification, they were only able to establish their identities thanks to a large number of various complex examinations."
