One of them applies to an electric heated blanket, which normally sells for $79.99 at Walmart.

However, the Maxkare branded item is now on sale for only $29.99, more than 60% off.

The blanket comes with six levels of heating and can be auto-set on a timer between one and five hours.

It can also be washed.

Overall, Walmart customers rate the electric blanket 4.4 stars out of five.

One five-star rating read: "I absolutely love this heated blanket. I work from home and get really cold and decided to try this blanket. It’s so soft and gets super warm and stays on for 5 hours. My cat and dogs love it too, so I bought 2 more for the living room for all to share."

And some don't even need the blanket to plug into a wall.

"This plush blanket is perfectly comfy and warm, even while sitting outdoors with a breeze. It's big enough and I like the heft. It's my go-to blanket, even when not plugged in," said another happy customer.

But most importantly, electric blankets could be a big money saver.

If you use it for eight hours per night, you use just $15 worth of electricity during 25 weeks per year, according to a post from Consumer Reports.

For the first year that the electric blanket is purchased and used, your savings could be up to $175, factoring in the cost of the item.

But the average savings per household that uses an electric blanket is $233 each year after that, according to Consumer Reports.

This assumes that you lower your thermostat temperature by eight degrees every day for 25 weeks in the year and that the wattage is around 100.

But of course, the heating temperature you set in your household will depend on how much you can tolerate.

This could vary by person and family so keep that in mind.

OTHER WAYS TO SAVE ON ENERGY

Along with electric blankets and lowering the temperature on your heating system, there are plenty of other ways households can cut costs.

One of them is looking out for vampire appliances, which are plugs at home that literally suck the money out of your wallet when they aren't in use or in standby mode.

Some common household examples of this include chargers, desktops, and TVs.

To avoid wasting money, be sure to unplug these when not in use.

Vampire appliances cost American households $165 every year.

Also, the Department of Energy and Environment has provided some other no-out-of-pocket lowering cost tips.

This includes reducing your lighting and using shades and blinds to keep the sun out.

There are also some low-investment options that you can try, which are as follows.

  • Use smart power strips
  • Use LED or energy-efficient lighting
  • Perform regular maintenance on HVAC system
  • Install programmable thermostats

Using efficient lighting alone could reduce costs by up to 95 percent, according to the DOE.
