In the not-so-distant past, YouTube was a place of roasts, commentary, and drama. Between 2013 and late 2017, the platform was flooded with YouTubers creating content that involved a fair amount of beef and controversy. People tuned in to witness the ultimate roast battles between their favorite creators.
The Golden Age of YouTube
During this era, YouTube was brimming with high-production diss tracks, commentary videos made in mom’s basements, and even voiceover commentary while gaming. Young viewers looked up to these YouTubers, calling them “savage,” “fearless,” and other cringy terms that boosted their egos.
However, everything changed in 2018, with a major shift in the YouTube landscape known as the “Adpocalypse.” Brands, corporations, and endorsers began withdrawing their sponsorships and ad revenue from YouTube due to concerns about insensitive content, bullying, verbal abuse, and inappropriate language.
YouTube’s Response
In response to the Adpocalypse, YouTube introduced new guidelines to censor content based on language, subject matter, and copyright strikes. These policies affected channels across the platform, but commentary channels were hit particularly hard. Many once-popular YouTubers faced accusations of bullying and creating callous content.
One such prominent figure from that era was LeafyIsHere, whose channel was at its peak before the Adpocalypse. However, the channel went through a rollercoaster of bans and comebacks as its creator, Calvin Vale, continued to resurface on social media platforms.
The Resurgence and Recent Ban
LeafyIsHere made a return to YouTube, Twitch, and Twitter a few months ago after being banned from these platforms a couple of years ago. Although his engagement wasn’t as high as before, he maintained a presence on social media. Unfortunately, his Twitter account was banned on September 16 due to content that violated safety guidelines, including bullying, insensitive language, and targeted harassment of fellow YouTubers. He was already banned from YouTube and Twitch, and currently, his only active platform is Instagram.
The Journey of Calvin Lee Vale
Calvin Lee Vale, the man behind LeafyIsHere, found solace in the world of YouTube after a turbulent childhood. He launched his channel in 2011, starting with Minecraft gaming content. Over time, he incorporated commentary as voiceovers, often targeting lesser-known channels and “roasting” their content. Clickbait titles and provocative thumbnails became his signature style, attracting viewers from all walks of life.
By 2015, Leafy’s channel had amassed half a million subscribers and a dedicated following. Regardless of his actions, his followers staunchly defended him and even sent death threats to smaller channels. Some of his controversial actions included mocking a goth YouTuber in a video titled “The Saddest Man on YouTube” and making fun of an autistic person, Fedora Guy. He also faced criticism for targeting Twitch streamer Pokimane and spreading misinformation about her.
The Downfall
As the toxicity in Leafy’s videos became apparent, his own subscribers turned against him, especially after the iDubbbz content cop video. In 2017, he issued an apology and went on hiatus, but the renewed YouTube guidelines led to multiple strikes on his account and ultimately resulted in a ban. Leafy briefly moved to Twitch but was banned there as well.
Leafy’s Multiple Bans
LeafyIsHere has been banned from social media platforms approximately six times. His recent return was met with mockery from netizens, who made him the subject of memes in his own style. His attempt to regain relevance with problematic YouTuber Keemstar also failed.
Most notably, his permanent ban from Twitter raised questions about the platform’s stance on free speech. While some speculated that his tweet about Israel may have been the reason for the ban, many netizens agreed that his content no longer aligned with the current social media landscape.
Conclusion
LeafyIsHere’s journey from YouTube stardom to multiple bans reflects the changing dynamics of online content creation and the growing importance of responsible and respectful content in today’s digital age.
