More than 4 in 10 U.S. workers don't take all their paid time off, according to the Pew Research Center.

But if your New Year's resolution is to have a better work-life balance, here's a simple trick to achieve it.

TikTok content creator John Liang, @johnsfinancetips explained in his latest video how everyone can use his planning hack to get some much needed downtime next year.

“Hey boss, I just want to let you know I’m taking 52 days of vacation in 2024,” Liang said to open his video.

“Bob, it is way too early for jokes,” he replied, playing his own stern “boss,” who was anything but amused at the idea.

Liang's secret to pulling this feat? Taking full advantage of federal holidays and long weekends, which employers typically give as paid vacation time, when requesting days off.

However, be warned that Liang's advice works best if you have a standard work week, and are only on the clock Mondays through Fridays.

The first day Liang suggests requesting is January 2nd to give you four days off to start the new year.

He then suggested taking off Tuesday, January 16th, and Friday, February 16th, to give yourself two four-day weekends because of the federal holidays Martin Luther King Day and President’s Day.

The next chance to land another four day weekend is not until May, but requesting Friday the 24th off, right before Memorial Day weekend, will give you a nice relaxing couple of days to kick off the summer.

If you get the itch to go out of town for a summer vacation, your best opportunity is to utilize Juneteenth celebrations.

Taking June 17th, June 18th, June 20th, and June 21st will give you nine consecutive days off, plenty of time to travel.

The next opportunity to have a long weekend falls on the Fourth of July which is on a Thursday, so taking July 5 off will give you several days to celebrate.

In September, Labor Day could also grant you a four-day weekend if you request Tuesday the 3rd off.

In October and November, you get a three day weekend courtesy of Indigenous People's Day and Veteran's Day, all without even having to ask.

And if you request Black Friday November 29th, following Thanksgiving, you get another four consecutive days off.

And to close out the year, you could score nine consecutive days for holiday festivities by requesting December 23rd, 24th, 26th, and 27th off around Christmas.

Choosing these dates for your 15 days of paid vacation time lands you with 52 days off for the year.

“My biggest piece of advice,” Liang added, “is to try to get these requests in early.”
